A number of photography tricks can help you turn a relatively mundane subject, like a staircase, into a magnificently beautiful photograph.

1. Angle - To make a drab photo beautiful, you might just need to move a few feet to the left or right. Experiment from different angles, taking in factors like light, background, and point of view. Don’t limit yourself to the horizontal angle, either. Try shooting your subject from above with a birds eye view, or from below to make it seem large and towering.

2. Lighting - Proper lighting can make virtually any photograph pop. If you are using natural lighting or shooting outdoors, consider the time of day. Perhaps the shot would look better if taken at the golden hours of dawn or dusk, when long shadows dance across your subject and lend it added depth.

3. Challenge Yourself - Practice is the best way to improve at most things, including photography. Challenge yourself by intentionally shooting mundane subjects. That box of paperclips and that pencil might look dull now, but figuring out through trial and error how to turn them into a striking photograph can be more useful than reading 50 photography articles. With enough practice, you will develop your photographic “eye,” learning what works for you and what doesn’t.
